As the end of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) looms ahead, there’s one thing on every writer’s mind: word count.
We’re shooting for 50,000 words this month, but how long should our full novels be? How many words should we write per chapter?
Today I’d like to share with you a long-term research project I’ve been working on called 65 Bestselling Word Counts. Good news, it’s free!
Target your Novel’s Word Count based on the Most Popular Lengths for your Genre
I’ve compiled a list of 65 bestselling books, and deconstructed each by total word count, number of chapters, and average words per chapter.
The books are sorted by genre, including Young Adult, Dystopian, Fantasy, Mysteries & Thrillers, Science Fiction, Romance, Children’s Books, Children’s Chapter Books, Memoir, Historical & Literary, and Horror & Zombies.
65 Bestselling Word Counts shows you the average total word count for eleven different genres, as well as each genre’s average number of chapters and average words per chapter.
Plus, you’ll get the word counts for the entire Harry Potter series, the Twilight Saga, and The Hunger Games Trilogy.
You can use the information to target your own novel depending on your genre, and to plan out chapter word count goals.
P.S. If you’re already on my email list, I sent you a link for the download this morning. You’re all set!
P.P.S. How’s your NaNo going? I’ve fallen behind my targeted word count, and I’ll be hard at work on an exponential comeback this week!
